Class Descriptions

Welcome to our Fall Showdown Fun Series! This season’s lineup offers a range of exciting opportunities for riders to showcase their skills. Below are the details for each class:

1. Grooming Class Teams (Showmanship Style)

  • Eligibility: Riders ages 7-17.
  • Description: This mandatory class emphasizes the importance of horse preparation for the show ring. Riders will be judged on their ability to clean and present their horse, including the mane, tail, body, and hooves. Proper tacking up is also required. Riders will be judged 50% on the horse's conformation and finish and 50% on their knowledge of the horse and equipment. Teams will be formed based on the number of participants. Horses will be shown in bridle or halter without additional appliances and must stand squarely with front legs perpendicular. The rear legs may be adjusted for inspection.

2. Walk-Trot Lead-Line

  • Description: Designed for riders new to Lead Line outside of barn shows. Riders will be led by a handler at the walk and individually trot in both directions of the ring. Posting is expected, but correct diagonals are not required. Assistance will be provided by a person aged 14 or over.

3. Walk-Trot Pleasure/Horsemanship

  • Description: This class evaluates the horse’s manners and suitability, focusing on horsemanship. Riders will be judged on their ability to control and handle their horse, emphasizing flat walks, correct leads, and smooth transitions. The horse should demonstrate comfort and ease with a quality, stylish presence. Laboring action, pulling, tossing the head, sideways movement, and tail-switching will result in penalties.

4. Walk-Trot Equitation Command

  • Description: Riders are judged on their basic equitation skills, including correct form, diagonals, and leads. Riders should demonstrate reasonable and easy control of their horse. The announcer will give commands, and riders will execute them as directed.

5. Walk-Trot Pattern Class

  • Description: Riders enter the ring one at a time to execute a specific pattern designated by the judge or show management. No rail work is done. Judging is based on the rider’s skill in controlling the horse, pattern accuracy, and overall equitation.

6. Show Rider Pleasure

  • Description: This class focuses on the horse’s overall pleasure and suitability, showcasing the rider’s ability to present a well-mannered and enjoyable mount.

7. Walk-Trot-Canter Pleasure Horsemanship

  • Description: Evaluate the rider’s horsemanship and the horse’s pleasure and suitability across all three gaits: walk, trot, and canter. Emphasis is placed on smooth transitions and the horse’s overall demeanor.

8. Show Rider Command

  • Description: This class tests the rider’s ability to follow commands given by the announcer. Riders are judged on their responsiveness and accuracy in executing the commands.

9. Walk-Trot-Canter Equitation Command

  • Description: Riders are judged on their equitation skills at all three gaits. The announcer will give commands, and riders must demonstrate correct form and execution.

10. Walk-Trot-Canter Pattern Class

  • Description: Riders perform a designated pattern at the walk, trot, and canter. Judging focuses on the rider’s skill, accuracy of the pattern, and overall equitation throughout the different gaits.

11. Jackpot Class

  • Description: A fun, high-stakes class with prize money awarded to the winner. The prize will be paid by check. This class adds an extra element of excitement to the competition!

We look forward to seeing you and your horses shine in the Fall Showdown Fun Series!

  • Hands should be over and in front of the horse’s withers, knuckles thirty degrees inside the vertical hands slightly apart and making a straight line from the horse’s mouth to the rider’s elbow. The bight of reins may fall on either side. However, all reins must be picked up at the same time. When using two harnesses, the snaffle rein should be on the outside, while the curb rein should be on the inside.
  • Basic Position. The eyes should be up and the shoulders back. Toes should be at an angle best suited to the rider’s conformation: ankles flexed in, heels down, calf of leg in contact with the horse, and slightly behind the girth. Iron should be on the ball of the foot and must not be tied to the rim.
  • Position in Motion. At the walk, sitting trot, and canter, the body should be a couple of degrees in front of the vertical; at posting trot, inclined forward; galloping and jumping, the same inclination as the posting trot.

In Saddle Seat Equitation classes, riders should convey the impression of reasonable and easy control. He should show himself to the best advantage to show a horse well. Ring generalship must be taken into consideration by the judges. A complete picture of the whole is of significant importance.

  • HANDS should be held in a comfortable position, neither perpendicular nor horizontal, to the saddle, showing sympathy, adaptability, and control. The height of the hand kept above the horse’s withers is a matter of how and where the horse carries his head. Holding the reins is optional; however, both hands must be used, and all reins must be picked up at once. The bight of the harness should be on the off side. According to tradition, the “on side” is the side on which you mount; therefore, the “offside” is the opposite side.
  • To obtain a proper position, the rider should place himself comfortably in the saddle and find his center of gravity by sitting slightly at the knees but without using irons. While in this position, adjust the leathers to fit. The rider should not be sliding off the back of the saddle, nor should there be excessive space in the seat behind the rider’s back. Irons should be placed under the ball of the foot (not toe nor “home”) with even pressure on the entire width of the sole and center of the iron. Foot position should be natural (neither significantly in nor out) with heels down.
  • POSITION IN MOTION.
    • Walk in slight motion in the saddle.
    • Trot: slight elevation in the saddle when posting; hips underbody not mechanical up-and-down nor swinging forward and backward.
    • Canter: the closed seat, going with the horse, not rocking.

    • Jog: slow movement side to side
    • Lope: the closed seat, going with the horse, not rocking.
    • HALT: The horse stands quietly on the rail until the judge looks around the ring.

Pattern Class

  • Pattern classes are to be run where a rider/horse enters the show ring one rider at a time and executes a specific pattern designated by the judge or show management. There is to be no rail work done. To be judged on a combination of the rider’s skill of controlling the horse, the accuracy of the pattern, and the rider’s equitation.
  • We recommend splitting any Pattern Classes at 12 entries to each show.
  • Posting the patterns ahead of the class is recommended.
  • We also recommend the scoring of Pattern classes:
A point system should be used for judging this class, whereby each
A section of the pattern is scored based upon a maximum number of points (typically 10), with one area designated for overall appearance/attire/presence. For example, if a pattern has six parts, the typical maximum number of points a rider could get would be 70 – 60 points for the parts and 10 points for the overall appearance. These scores should be posted after the Pattern Class is completed. This will help instructors, riders, and parents understand how this class was judged.

It will be posted seven days ahead of time for riders to study.

Email neva@Lstables.com if you would like the pattern.

What's the Judge looking for?

Judging the walk is based on manners, quality, and natural action; it is not used as a rest period.

  • FLAT WALK: The flat walk should be an elastic, ground-covering, and steady four-beat gait maintaining proper form and consistency in stride. It should be executed quickly that be compatible with the type of class. It should display the horse’s suitable styles, stride, and attitude. The flat walk is relaxed.
  • The trot is a natural, two-beat diagonal gait in which the front foot and the opposite hind foot take off from the ground in unison and land simultaneously. A balanced trot features coordinated motion with straight, proper shoulder motion of front legs, with flexing hocks carried close together. It is executed in a highly collected manner and should display the horse’s athletic ability.
  • Canter is relatively slow, lofty, and fluid with a definite three-beat cadence. High action, a good way of going, and a good collection are paramount. It is a restrained gallop in which two diagonal legs are paired; the single beat falls between the successive moments of the other two unpaired legs. The unpaired legs act independently—the foreleg with which the horse leads and its diagonal hind. The propulsion is in the hindquarters, with the leading foreleg sustaining the concussion of the final third beat. There is a brief interval when all four feet are off the ground. It is an ambidextrous gait, executed on the lead, which is toward the center of the ring to relieve stress and aid in balance (A leader determines which foreleg—right or left—sustains the concussion of the final third beat after its diagonal hind leg starts the propulsion of the first beat).

General, Rule and Regulations

  • Headers are allowed in the show ring during the line-up in any class. No towels or whips allowed. They must be neatly attired with clean, well-fitted conservative clothes.
