Established in 1965 by Dan and Marlene La Fleur, La Fleur Stables has been a cornerstone of the equestrian community. It is dedicated to advancing the world of horses through a wide range of services, including boarding, training, competing, buying, selling, and more.
A Deep-rooted Heritage
Dan and Marlene, originally from Stoughton, WI, embarked on their journey with their first horse farm on Highway 138 between Stoughton and Oregon. Marlene, who grew up with a deep passion for horses and competed in Quarter Horse shows with her father, Arnold Anderson, discovered her love for American Saddlebreds when "Mr. Sandman," an American Saddlebred, was sent to her for training. This pivotal moment set the course for their future endeavors.
Though Dan has pursued a successful stock and commodities broker career, his dedication to La Fleur Stables has never wavered. Together with Marlene, who has been a constant presence in the training and development of their horses, they have created a legacy centered around American Saddlebreds. Their family, including their grown children—son, daughter, and Neva—has always been deeply involved in the stables, with Neva now taking the helm in training and instruction.
A Storied Journey
La Fleur Stables initially introduced and competed with various horse breeds throughout the Midwest. In the late 1970s, Dan and Marlene moved to a more expansive and sophisticated Fond du Lac, WI facility. This move marked a shift to specializing in American Saddlebreds, and over the years, they successfully trained, bred, and competed with 80 horses. Marlene’s dedication to teaching extended to various schools in Wisconsin, where she imparted the fundamentals of riding and fostered a deep respect for horses among learners of all ages.
Their commitment to the equestrian community has been unwavering. Both Dan and Marlene actively participate in state and national associations, serving on boards and as officers. Their involvement has helped shape the horse show business, and they remain a familiar and respected presence around the stables.
A New Chapter
As they approach their retirement at the end of this year, Dan and Marlene leave behind a remarkable legacy. Their state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Dane County stands as a testament to their vision, featuring a millennium barn with cutting-edge technology and conveniences. Designed by Marlene, this beautiful barn and riding arena epitomize their commitment to excellence.
The current facility not only meets but exceeds the expectations of the most discerning horse lovers. The La Fleur Stables staff continues to provide exceptional knowledge and care, ensuring that the stables remain a premier destination for horse activities.
Looking Forward
With Dan and Marlene’s retirement, Neva La Fleur will assume full-time management of the horse operations. Under her guidance, La Fleur Stables will continue to thrive and uphold the high standards set by Dan and Marlene. The fourth generation of La Fleur horse enthusiasts, including seven grandchildren who actively compete in horse shows, carries forward the family’s passion and dedication.
As we celebrate Dan and Marlene’s incredible journey and look forward to the future, we invite you to join us in honoring their legacy and supporting the continued excellence of La Fleur Stables.
Thank you for being a part of our story.
