What to wear around horses and at the stables?

Horse Programs, like other sports, have a “uniform.”  This is not for appearance or a fashion show but for the rider's safety. Dress according to the weather.

Proper Uniform Attire

Protective Headgear

All riders of any age must wear an ASTM-approved helmet with a safety harness intact and adequately secured when mounted. Helmets are designed to protect the rider’s head in the event of falls from a horse. WE RENT Helmets at the Stables. $10 one time or $30 for four times of riding.

  1. Front—The helmet should sit about an inch above the eyebrows. More than 1” =too small Less than 1” =too big.
  2. Side—The straps on the side should meet just below and in front of your earlobes.
  3. Back—A snug-fitting helmet is best. The harness on the back should prevent the helmet from moving forward. Avoid using your hair to create a proper fit.
  4. Throat—The strap under your chin should be snug but not tight. Tilt your chin up and down to ensure a proper fit.
  5. TEST —Grasp the helmet with two hands and rock it back and forth. The skin and eyebrows should move with the helmet.

Make sure the expiration date is updated.

No helmet can protect against every head injury. However, studies show a dramatic reduction in the severity of injuries when an adequately fitted helmet is worn every time you ride a horse. Replace your helmet every five years or immediately after a direct impact from a fall.

Tennis shoes are OK, but NO moccasins, sandals, flip-flops, clogs, fashion boots, cowboy boots, and similar soft footwear are not allowed anytime anyone is handling or riding a horse.

Keepers

Keepers

Keepers

Keepers are at the bottom of the jobs. Keepers are REQUIRED if you have boot-cut riding pants. They create a nice finished look and keep the pants from riding up and allowing for chafing from the saddle/stirrup leather.

Keepers

NO jewelry such as dangly earrings and necklaces.  These can become hung up on the saddle and cause the rider injury.  If you must wear a medical alert bracelet, please ensure it fits snugly.

Gloves

Loose long Hair should be pulled back for EVERY lesson. Not only is this neater and safer, and it helps your helmet be fitted just for your head! Don't worry. We always have extra (new) hair ties in the stable store!
